I was the Team Leader in Iowa (Each state has a team leader) for International Drone Community (IDC) and I organized the First ever International Drone Community Event that took place 2016 in Cambridge, IA during Skunk River Valley Days. I held the drone event primarily for local farmers.

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">1947 Taylorcraft

My very first airplane ride at 5 years old was in a 1947 Taylorcraft which belonged to my Grampa Freiman. We were at a family reuinon at his sons farm (my uncle Tom) in Jordan, MN. There was no flat grass runway or straight enough road to take off and land. The farm was hilly with bolders. What did I know? I was five. We started to take off up a hill then down a hill. It was a 15 minute flight. Landing was on the side of the up and down hills because some grazing cows moved to the flat take off area. I have never had a problem finding a landing area when taking a check ride and the instructor surprisingly pulls power and says "Where you going to land?" I learned I can land anywhere as long as there isn't anything bigger than the airplane to hit. When I purchased an Ercoupe I would land on farm fields as part of my personal training and almost always landed on every grass airstrip I could find.

My Grandpa went out and bought it and taught himself to fly like I did with my hang gliders. Below is a photo of my Grandpas 1920 Lincoln Page. He, Arnold and his brother Rubin purchased the Lincoln Page in 1929 for $3000 or $1500 each from Holman Field in St. Paul, MN. It had the infamous Hamilton OX-5 12 cylinder engine. The side of the airplane has "Frieman Bros." painted on the Fuselage. Yes this really is my Grandpas Airplane. I showed this picture to an aviation historian and he thought picture was fake but authenticated it with photos and his anme painted on the side.

Taurus Kicenuik, the inventor of the Icarus V is pictured in back on the left with the red helmet. There were 7 powered hang gliders at the very first powered hanglider meet in the early 70's in held Michigan. The pilots and spectators were from all over the country and each had various levels of experience. There was journalist that came over from Greece to photograph the event because he was interested in introducing the sport to Greece. He asked me to come to Greece and build Powered hangliders.

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">Notice the flags. The winds were 25 MPH at mid afternoon. No-one should have been flying that day. But who knew? It was the first powered hanglider meet and there were no trees from a cliff to run into. I had a "kill switch" in my mouth for my throttle. I designed a motor mount for a MAC 101 (10 HP) gocart engine and straight drive 24" propellor. Boy did that propellor RPM scream! I wanted to abort the windy flight. I wasn't in control, but my "kill switch" had shorted out and the engine wouldn't quit. A video will be shown of the flight (coming soon). It's a barnstormer!

I couldn't STOP the motor and I was approaching a crowd of spectators. I was afraid to fly over them. I thought if I got too high I wouldn't be able to turn around. I thought I would end up down wind at 50MPH or faster. I might not have the strenghth or skill to turn back upwind to the landing area and I couldn't stop the motor! I knew I would crash. So in the photo you see me hanging at take off. I was probably ten feet hight and 50 yards from take off. I bailed from the hang cage with the motor running. I dropped to the ground and tumbled a little. The IcarusV flew straight up full power and did a perfect loop and landed THUMPED right in front of me. The crowd thought it was part of an act like an airshow and applauded with an uproar while the home builders and pilots were probably drying off or wiping out their pants. Most of the other pilots were senior to me in experience and half of them were the inventors of these powered hangliders there to promote the sport.

<span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif">Airplane Toy boxes were created because I didn't have time to build a peddle plane for my 5 year old sons birthday. The peddle planes you see at EAA are fantastic and the plans are very detailed. The plans are overwhelming and my Dad (Grandpa Olson) and I only had a couple weeks to build an airplane for my son TJ birthday. The peddle plane looked like the same amount of time to build as my ultralight. which took a year. We bought a piece of plywood on Saturday, a sixpack of beer and created plans on a napkin to create the first airplane toybox. <span face=""arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif" style="font-size: x-large;">What Heaven will be like

I remember every tent I ever slept in. My Dad and I went fishing in 1960's near Alexandria, MN and slept in a green army surplus type tent which had a musty smell of oiled canvas which ment high adventure to me. I have the first tent I bought myself in the 1970s for Oshkosh I've used it 30 times at Oshkosh. I flew into Oshkosh and slept under the wing of the Ercoupe at least 30 times with different friends and family. Pictured here is my beautiful wife Marilyn and youngest son, TJ. I can't bear to let the memories in the orange pup-tent with broken poles go.

I love waking up to revele at 7AM each morning at Oshkosh, now AirVenture. It is a magical sense of adventure that comes naturally to any young boy and me. There is nothing like stepping out of your tent and discovering a whole new world of aviaton. This is why people vacation in beautiful places like Oshkosh. It holds the secret to the stories you love. No politics or fake news, just the sounds and smell of airplanes and visiting with people sharing the fruits of the spirit. This is what heaven is going to be like landing at and stepping into a whole new fairy-tale world. Yes, I believe there will be an airport in heaven there for your tin mistress. You won't need a hangar. Airplanes will all be lined up for everyone to see and go "Ooh, Ah, Wow. Can you imagine taking Jesus flying in your award winning airplane?

It was day and night working on the project for probably a year. I flew hanglider once off a long sloping hill in McKnight Park across the I 94 freeway from 3M Corporation. I added en engine and took off from the Lake Elmo airport crashed it. I rebuilt and recovered it with a new paint scheme you see here hanging on wall. I have a broad based interest in aviation. As you can see in the photo there are R/C airplanes hanging up. My first R/C, a 1930s Trixter Beam and smaller balsa model I built from a kit. My Tin Mistress, a 1946 Ercoupe has the 65HP Continental engine off for painting and also allowing me to polish the firewall. That's tedious work but worth it making it an award winner Ercoupe at Oshkosh and other National Airshows.
The two Icarus V wings are hanging up on back wall (looks like art) with a second new paint design after recovering from the last crash. Lot's of painting; lot's of newspaper and tape and personal touch. A new gold hang cage can be seen lower left behind the propane heater awaiting assembly for future weekend powered hanglider flight. With all you see in this picture - where is the time to fly? It's too cold to fly and it looks like there is snow on the ground. My Dad will be back soon from flying one of his Beechcraft Bananzas. I'll open the frig. have a beer and think about where to focus my interest in this hobby. I read and re-read an article in 1974 Popular Science Magazine on fixed wing hang gliders and decided to build Icarus V hang glider which at the time was state of the art. It resembles its predecessor the Icarus II, what most people know as the Easy Riser. Pilot controls pitch by shifting body weight on parallel bars. Lateral control is actuated by twist grips.

I grew up playing on swing sets and jumping off as far as I could at the playground. Growing up as long as I remember I had a dreams of swinging on a swing set and jumping off a cliff hundreds of feet high. I would jump off the swing and fly through the air and I always woke up before I hit the ground. In 1972 I purchased a Standard Wing Jobe Hanglider and jumped off a Mississippi River Bluff across from the Schmidt Brewery in St. Paul, MN. That ended my childhood flying dreams. Here is a link to some of my flying interests. http://scottolson.name/bio/flyi.html
